A Solid Foundation
— by Stearns & Foster on Aug 8, 2023
Building your perfect sleep oasis often begins with an exceptional, hand-crafted Stearns & Foster® mattress. Like Jack and Rose, peanut butter and jelly, and all of the other perfect pairings in life, your dream mattress is never complete without the right foundation. When you think about the ultimate night’s sleep, the first thing that comes to mind is typically the mattress itself (and rightfully so). While this may be true, the star of the show would be nothing without an exceptional supporting cast. Adding a foundation or power base to your Stearns & Foster® mattress can enhance your sleep quality while delivering the best comfort and design to your home. But how do you create the perfect match?
After selecting your mattress, we recommend pairing it with a flat foundation or a power base.
Shoppers are often surprised to learn that we design Stearns & Foster® mattresses to be supported by a solid foundation — whether a flat foundation or a power base — to provide adequate support and indulgent comfort. A flat surface with sufficient center support is required to ensure complete warranty protection for all Stearns & Foster® mattresses. When considering which support system is best for your space, it’s essential to understand the features and benefits. We asked our product development experts to provide a deep dive into the differences, so you can decide which option best fits your lifestyle.
Why Should You Pick a Flat Foundation?
Pair a flat foundation with your mattress to create a simple, traditional feel in your space. Stearns & Foster® flat foundations are made from high-grade wood, containing a high-gauge steel wire support structure. The flat foundation will provide a solid, supportive base for your mattress to enhance comfort — all while maintaining the integrity and lifespan of the mattress. A flat foundation replaces a box spring and can be placed directly on your bed frame. We offer flat foundations in two heights: low profile (5") and high profile (9") — both include a 10-year limited warranty.
What’s a Power Base?
If you want to add adjustability and extra features to create a more personalized, luxurious sleep experience, a power base may be better for you. A power base allows you to customize the position of your mattress by adjusting the head and foot lifts. Some power base models include additional features like massage, automatic snore detection, and more!
All Stearns & Foster® mattresses can pair with a power base. Power bases should be used without any other foundation or box spring — place your mattress directly on top of the base. While the bases can stand alone, you may also pair them with most modern bed frames to add the finishing touch to your space. However, please note that they may not fit inside antique bed frames or other non-standard furniture; we always recommend measuring the inside of your existing frame before you place your order.

^Bed raises once approximately 12 degrees in response to snoring. This may reduce snoring in otherwise healthy individuals who snore due to body positioning.
