Just Relax: Your Ideal Bedroom Ambiance

Two words no one likes to hear: “just relax.” You may struggle to allow yourself to unwind in a culture that’s constantly on the go. At night, you lie down to rest only to find your mind still wandering… planning out the next day, the next week, the next year… ultimately leaving you even more stressed than before. And while we all understand the importance of a good night's sleep, few will say they’re actually getting it.

Whether solidifying a nighttime routine, going to bed earlier than usual, or avoiding caffeine in the afternoon, we’re constantly looking for ways to improve our sleep quality. One option that can help you wind down at night is adjusting the atmosphere in your bedroom. Below, you’ll find simple suggestions that enhance any bedroom — curating a comfortable and relaxing ambiance.

Diffuse oils or light a candle

  • Aromatherapy and essential oils can play a crucial role in sleep quality. Our favorite oils for deep sleep and relaxation include lavender, chamomile, bergamot, and sandalwood. You can learn how to utilize oils to achieve better sleep here.
  • Opt for a wood wick candle – it creates a pleasant crackling sound similar to a fireplace.

Be mindful of your lighting choice

  • Incorporate a lamp on your nightstand or in the corner of the room to help reduce the amount of harsh overhead lighting as you prepare to wind down for the night.

Utilize soft sounds

  • If you typically require background noise to fall asleep, try swapping the TV for a sound machine. White noise, a thunderstorm, or ocean sounds are perfect options. Instrumental music or songs with slower lyrics can also be an excellent alternative.

Adjust your thermostat

  • The recommended temperature for a good night's sleep is 60 - 67°F. Try adjusting your bedroom to this range to maximize rest and relaxation.
  • But remember, temperature is subjective! For some, colder is better, and vice versa. Add or remove bedding to achieve your ultimate comfort level.

Prepare for your next night’s sleep

  • A freshly made bed and a straightened room can work wonders in setting the mood for a good night’s sleep – it helps the room feel cozy and inviting. Take time in the morning to make your bed. You will have a crisp bed to crawl into later, and you'll start your day feeling accomplished!
